I just saw Mehmet Oz on Charlie Rose; I already eat a healthy diet, but I hope this helps those who do not:

You On A Diet shopping list

Oz said that one's waist should never be more than half of one's height. Sounds like a good guideline. I'm 72 inches tall so my waist should not be more than 36 inches (it is in fact 33 or 34 inches).

It is really hard to diet, but I think we have given up. There is a lot of high fructose corn syrup in so many foods. This has been shown to cause rapid weight gain.

One must read the list of ingredients on the label before putting the item in the shopping cart, and avoid eating out more than twice a week.

Do you see that ' in the subject line? I was wondering if this was the sign of a live journal bug?

There was an another study last night that having overweight friends makes people gain weight, and probably because they go out to eat together, and also it makes one lower their standards, but if 75 percent of us are overweight we can't really avoid having overweight friends, so I don't know what the answer is. I am sure you would be a good influence.

Yes, it does help when one's spouse/partner and one's friends are health-conscious, read labels, and tend to shop in health-food stores or health-food sections of supermarkets.

It was the ' turned into &#39, I looked it up in Google.

I think it's eating out with your friends, that does it even more. If you go to a big portion establishment, and everyone is pigging out, you will also. It takes tremendous will power not to gain weight.

Yes, though I never heard that before I think it is as it does not require someone to be really thin but just have a "healthy" ratio. (I'm thinking in terms of a woman 5'4" for instance....that would allow for a 32 inch waist which means she can actually be a little plump for her height but still in a healthy enough place.)
