I wonder how much it will cost to upgrade to Lion. To upgrade or not to upgrade?

Lately when I attempt to install OSX updates the installation stalls at the "configuring installation" stage. Does anyone know why that would be happening and what I should do to remedy the problem so I can keep my software up to date?
