You are aware that I did a paper about abstinence-only sex ed?
I'm starting to think that organized religion is pretty weird (if weird means trying to control people's sexuality in order to wield power over them throughout their entire lives, then I think I'm guilty of understatement).
Those folks are going to be cast into the lake of fire. *g*
I was not aware that you wrote a paper on abstinence-only sex ed. Was the paper published, and if so is it available on-line?
Conservative, conformist, risk averse people will find ways to control people's lives whether through religion, schools and workplaces, or the government. For those of us who are compassionate free spirits and free thinkers religion is a way to sharpen our sense of ethics and provide feelings of acceptance/inclusion and connection/belonging/community.
The paper was for a seminar. It wasn't published, and it was only about 5 pages, although I got an A. I looked at abstinence-only sexuality education programs, which, under the Bush administration, were the only sex ed. programs eligible to receive federal funding. One of the problems with this is that several of these programs include material that is medically inaccurate and that reflects the set of values of specific religions, without regard to those of the families of the public school students who would be receiving this information.
Instead of value-neutral, non-judgmental information that public school students need, the approach of many of these abstinence-only programs is to instill fear & shame.
You've got that right. One thing that HHS can do is to review the federal funding guidelines to include comprehensive sex ed programs. Since F.Y. 2003, abstinence-only programs were the only ones eligible to receive federal funding for public school contracts. The states that wanted to teach comprehensive sex ed (California is an example) had to come up with the funding themselves. Some other states decided that abstinence-only wasn't doing a good job of giving essential information to their public school students, so they decided to turn down federal funding (Rhode Island is an example), in order to get their students sex ed programs that were accurate & relevant.
We definitely have a long way to go.
