We did not have to chose between mountains/forest vs. sea shore on this vacation. Yesterday we did both. We hiked a challenging trail on a hill/mountain just southwest of the Foxwoods Casino and the Pequot Indian Museum (we visited the latter years ago & is worth a trip on its own) and then drove to the shore and walked along the Southington Borough waterfront after which we drove to Westerly, RI for a swordfish dinner. Today we spent several hundred dollars at the Tanger Outlet in Westbrook, CT. Shoshana bought six pairs of shoes, a dress, shorts, a top, and I bought a pair of boots ($55 reduced from $110), a pair of sandals, pants, and a short sleeve polo shirt (we both also bought underwear and socks). We dined at The Seaman's Inn in Mystic where we sat outside and listened to a jazz duet (guitar and acoustic bass). Tomorrow we'll have lunch with my in-laws and pick up our niece Naomi with whom we'll return to Brooklyn, and on Thursday and Friday Shoshana will show her around the big city including a performance of Avenue Q Thursday night while I print out and mail more copies of [livejournal.com profile] bethr's and my IAMB book proposal and sample chapters (the latter beautifully designed by [livejournal.com profile] chanaleh). On shabbat Naomi will go to shul with us and afterward her dad will join us for an afternoon in Coney Island before taking Naomi home.

We went to the Pequot museum when we were ther Thanksgiving. It is a great museum. The kids loved it too. I think we ate at the Seaman's Inn too. Is that the one right in/next to Mystic Seaport? Mystic Seaport was great too. I so want to go back. It was cold when we were there so we couldn't explore too much but what we saw was great!

Yes, The Seaman's Inn (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-reviews-2977326-prod-travelguide-action-read-ratings_and_reviews-i) is right next to Mystic Seaport. I first visited and enjoyed the seaport as a kid; when yours are a bit older they'll get more out of it.

They do pretty well at Living History places. They enjoyed the Whaling boats, the gardens (always love gardens) and the cooking. We definitely plan on going back a bunch.

I grew up in Ct and really love the state but I can never get G to do "CT things"

Shoshana also grew up in CT. Unfortunately many New Yorkers overlook CT as a place one passes through on the way to other parts of New England. Is G's reluctance related to his feelings about his in-laws? Do you have other friends with whom you can do CT things?

Greg's not a sightseer (he doesn't like what he considers "touristy" things) and I think he just likes to hang out and do NY things on the weekend. Considering how hard he works, I can understand why he'd really rather just stay here and do things.

G has a point; when living in the world's greatest city there is less of a need to leave. But for really good hiking one does have to travel beyond the 5 boroughs.

That's why I go upstate to visit friends. I love hiking.

My in-laws also live in CT now and they live by a lake, so we do get to enjoy that sort of thing.

I've also got to tell you that I can get into a good long walk in Central Park too!
