Our shy cat is hiding

While my brother, SIL, and their two kids were visiting us our new cat came out of his carrier and scampered under the futon in the guest bedroom. That was the last place we saw him. We've looked all over the apartment and can't find him. Where can he be? When he's hungry or thirsty or has to pee or poop I suppose he'll come out. Until then I won't be able to take photos of him to share with my el jay friends. He is gray, a year old and we've decided to name him Sasson.

One minute later...He's hiding on the lowest shelf of the bookcase which is obscured by the futon. We'd really like to get to know him, but I guess it will take time for him to feel comfortable with us.

Five minutes later...Sasson let us pet him; he especially likes to have his ears touched. But he's still a bit shy and likes to retreat under the futon.

Awwww...poor scared kitty. It does take a while for cats to adjust to a new home--and they can find the most ingenius hiding places.

Shoshana is very good with him. It will take a while, but I'm sure he'll adjust to his new home.

My big cat, Spook, went into the walls of my apartment when we moved to Massachusetts and wouldn't come out... until the next day or so, we heard him fighting with something and he came dashing out through a hole in the back of one of the cabinets. Silly cat. His compadre Midnight, OTOH, spent about half an hour looking around the new place and then started asking for dinner.

Sasson still likes confined spaces but also likes to hang out with us (especially with Shoshana; we'll see how much he desires my company during the week when Shosh is at work and I'm at home). He nibbles at his food, but only when Shoshana encourages him.

Some always hide when guest come over, and so go and meet the guests. Weasle introduces himself to guests, but he is the expectation to the rule. Most cats don't like guests in their homes.

He seems fairly laid back in the daytime but runs around the apartment maniacally at night, jumping on the bed and scampering all over us to get to and from the window sill above our heads as he makes his rounds from room to room.

Did he used to have outdoor access? Often some cats act that way, because want to go at night and prowl, but it can be dangerous to do that. You may have to confine him to a room to get a good night's sleep.

He's always been an indoor cat. I've been told it can take up to two weeks for a cat to get used to and feel comfortable in a new home.

He won't have anything to miss. Sometimes it's hard to turn a cat that had outdoor access into an indoor one, and sometimes they behave like that due to being frustrated. It is mostly younger cats who want to hunt, because they learned to hunt. Hunting is dangerous also. Better to keep them indoors. Cars are too dangerous.
