My mom reports that my brother Daniel met his oncologist yesterday who said that he could not recommend a course of treatment without further tests (bone marrow and more blood work). Daniel is now fearing the worst--he figures it must not be localized if further tests are required, but it is quite possible that the MD is simply being cautious before recommending a treatment. I'll call Daniel this weekend.

When president Nixon died Shoshana had to work, but when Reagan died she got the day off. Now despite the death of president Ford she will have to work on Tuesday. When Reagan died the republicans controlled congress; fortunately that ends next week, and here in NY our new governor is a democrat. Also, many NYers remember Ford's refusal to bail out a bankrupt NYC govt, though some now date NYC's rebirth to Ford's making us pull up our own socks. Shoshana thinks she ought to get a day off not only for President Ford's burial but also for James Brown's.

Several articles in JTA explore changing the definition of Kashrut to require that the workers who help bring the food to market are treated fairly and that the food be grown in an environmentally resonsible manner.

These include
a proposed conservative hechsher
that would require that food workers be fairly treated and have safe working conditions.

An
earlier article
discussed ecological concerns, and an article from yesterday discusses both concerns.
