one nation?

In Ken Burns' Civil War documentary an historian is quoted as saying that before the civil war people said "The United States are" and after the civil war we say "The United States is." If the Roberts nomination is approved the southern victory on the constitutional issue of states rights will be pretty near complete, and we will have to go back to speaking of The United States in the plural. And when that happens we in the blue states will have to use that very states rights argument to insist on the right of our states to keep abortion legal, to ban anti-gay discrimination, to control gun ownership and purchases, to enforce strict state environmental standards, and to keep religion out of the public sphere.

that is some scary stuff. being north of you(canada) i've only heard little bits about roberts. mainstream media here is bringing him off as leaning right, yet really unproven on major issues. but of course - that's mainstream media.

we have our own little scourge to deal with here too. it's called the conservative party.

Interesting thoughts! And I'm afraid, all too true.
