Good article, David. Pretty ironic using the rainbow-colored oil slick to illustrate the covenant God made with Noah.

BTW, where does it say that Noah came out of the Ark on the 27th of Iyar? I don't think that's in Genesis. I never heard this before. And how do they know the exact date? Unless they found it recorded in Noah's diary.

The holiday was invented by Rabbi Arthur Waskow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Waskow) a couple of decades ago in response to another environmental disaster that coincided with the date specified in Genesis (which refers to it as the 27th day of the second month on a calendar that started in the spring with Nisan the month in which Pesach falls). According to his friend and colleague [livejournal.com profile] rabjeff the Noah family and their animal companions entered the ark on the 17th of Iyyar and exited a year and ten days later.
