It's a bit early but... Have a Great New Year! (I had a few minutes and stopped by now before I get too busy closing the year at my firm to spread around some good wishes)

Things like this make me so incredibly angry. I sincerely believe that the Haredim are the single most destructive force in Judaism today, and that their constant oppression of the widow, the orphan, the stranger, and their fellow Jew will be the reason that God will unleash the Iranian beast against Israel. There is nothing that they do that is not a Hillul Hashem.

When I davenned at the Kotel, I did so from Stern's Paths of Faith, with an Amidah that includes the matriarchs, and I felt defiant when I read "אלהי שרה, אלהי רבקה, אלהי לאה ואלהי רחל" And when I got to the prayer against the heretics, I was thinking of them.

Perhaps if Israel spent less money for them to sit in Yeshivas thinking up ways to destroy the state, it would have more money to defend itself against external enemies. Stuff like this makes me pessimistic about the future of the third commonwealth.

As noxious as is the arrogance and intolerance of the Haredim the West Bank settlements of the knitted kippah Orthodox actually pose a greater threat to Israel than the bigotry of the black hats. In this country renegade former Hasidim like Reb Zalman have made an important contribution to non-Orthodox Jewish spirituality.
