I just finished reading Orhan Pamuk's novel "Snow" & really enjoyed it. The novel describes the conflict between secular and religious cultures in a small Turkish border town as experienced by a sensitive introverted poet who has just returned from exile in Germany. It seems to me that religious anti-modernism whether overseas or in America's bible belt is a defensive response to a feeling of inferiority. Denigrating our modern and post-modern liberal values makes members of provincial, parochial cultures feel less inferior when comparing themselves to us.
