A skeptical view of Artificial Intellegence

For decades now computer scientists and futurists have been telling us that computers will achieve human-level artificial intelligence soon. That day appears to be off in the distant future. Why? In this penetrating skeptical critique of AI, computer scientist Peter Kassan reviews the numerous reasons why this problem is harder than anyone anticipated. — Michael Shermer

This is one of [livejournal.com profile] xf's areas of study/interest based programs, including the address-book and he thinks the whole "Matrix"/"Singularity" philosophy is full of shit. He's himself written a number of AI-based programs, including the address book we use at home (http://www.sbook5.com/).

The connection has timed out

The server at www.sbook5.com is taking too long to respond.

How is his address book superior to Apple's?

Apple used a lot of his code to write their address book, because SBook was written for the NeXT platform, which Apple took pretty much wholesale to construct OS X. There's very little difference between the two (although he'd probably disagree), although SBook is probably a little more fluid in how it handles free text.

I don't know why the server timed out though. I checked on it when I sent the previous comment to you, and it was working fine.
