xmas eve in Queens
Dec. 25th, 2006 07:22 pmIt's a tradition for Jews to go to Chinese restaurants on Christmas, but since Chinese food is too high in sodium for my medically restricted diet we decided to get Indian food (my favorite) instead. And for a change of pace we drove to the South Asian section of Jackson Heights, Queens where we strolled the streets admiring the wares in the sari shops and looked at the posters for Bollywood movies before and after dining at The Jackson Diner where we had a delicious dinner. At a nearbye table was a large multi-generational Chinese family--so now we know where Chinese families dine on Christmas while the Jews are eating Chinese food. Afterward we stopped at an Indian bakery for sweets (pistachio and chocolate) which we ate as we walked back to the car. We had little traffic in both directions, and overall it was a very pleasant evening.
Yesterday was the bridge between our birthdays on the Jewish calendar. We bought each other books; Shoshana bought me Lives of the Poets and Laws of Creation (selections from Whitman--even though I already own the complete Whitman), and I bought her de Kooning: An American Master.
