From Now Until Noon

1

The moon was full when we first
met, and it's been waning ever since,
like our love.
But my hair is growing wild at your side,
and my mouth is still an open wound,
and I stumble and get swept up in you
like in the maze of my life.

2

Because you won't let me be
without tormenting me,
evenings, whoever wants can lay
his body on mine,
take me front and rear,
hurting less than a mosquito bite
and than you.

3

And I, what did I do the whole
time
the coffee was burning my tongue?

4

Kiss me now
through the glass splinters
of your locked door
up to the blessed blood.

5

A lazy donkey goes astray
amid the cactus shrubs.
From now until noon
quiet as a morgue.
Under your scalp a skull
like everyone else's,
and you'll crawl out of your burrow like the rest
of the righteous at the end of days.
But now you're killing
me while I'm still
alive.

--Rachel Eshed
Translated from the Hebrew by David Cooper

I will be reading selections from my translation of Rachel Eshed's poems (and one or two of my own) at The Cornelia Street Cafe (Cornelia Street between Bleeker and 6th Ave in Greenwich Village) on Wednesday 20 Sept at 6pm. I will be one of three readers on the program, don't know whether I will be first, middle, or last (in any event it's rude to leave in the middle), and will bring books to sell and sign after the reading.

I'm a Mandarin!

You're an intellectual, and you've worked hard to get where you are now. You're a strong believer in education, and you think many of the world's problems could be solved if people were more informed and more rational. You have no tolerance for sloppy or lazy thinking. It frustrates you when people who are ignorant or dishonest rise to positions of power. You believe that people can make a difference in the world, and you're determined to try.
