What is your earliest national memory? (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] novapsyche)

I describe mine in a comment to [livejournal.com profile] novapsyche's post. But that was not my earliest election day recollection. I remember accompanying my parents to the polls for a state wide election two years earlier. I tried to do an extemporaneous poll of my own, but when I asked the grownups present for whom they were voting everyone had the same reply: "the best man." There were no women on the ballot in 1958. I must have been a cute three year old.

Red Hook Fairway: Brownstone Brooklyn's Town Square

I love how at Fairway we invariably run into people we know from our current shul, our former shul, my former pickup softball game, other writers and visual artists, current and former neighbors, and Shoshana's co-workers. In addition to its food selection and price Fairway feels like our town square. I suppose some would say the same about the Park Slope Food Co-op, but we've never been members there because they don't have a parking lot and it's too far away to schlep groceries on foot.
